Wine Review: Overland – Grenache 2014

I found this wine at Grocery Outlet for $10, with a suggested regular price of $40. Tasted 07/18

Tasting Notes

Medium ruby colour, with pink hues at the edge

Predominantly smoky nose of medium+ intensity with elements of cured meat and red cherry

Relatively high acidity, and prevalent, medium tannin ensure that this wine remains dry on the palate. The finish is of red cherry and strawberry fruits, with a smoky backdrop and a hint of pepper spice. Fills the palate well.

Conclusion

This medium-bodied wine was a good find for the money. It’s a little heavier than I’m used to for a Grenache, which given the meaty aromas makes me think there is likely to be some Syrah in here too. This is no bad thing though, and I was so impressed with the value of this wine that I picked up another couple of bottles while the store still had it.

Grenache is a great option for hot days, as it tends to be nice chilled. This offering from Sonoma was no exception, and in fact the extra body of this wine helped it stand up to a grilled steak better than a lighter Grenache might.
