Mega Focus gets it’s name from the 24ft sculpture created by Dale Evers, as featured on the bottle. It takes pride of place at the front of Sculpterra’s sculpture garden.
The climate of Paso Robles suits the Rhone varietals that make up this wine very well, and the region is definitely gaining a reputation for world-class “GSM” wines. This refers to the three main grape varietals of Chateauneuf du Pape in France. The 2014 Mega Focus contains 47% Grenache, 30% Syrah, and 23% Mourvedre and was aged in oak barrels for 14 months. This wine won a silver medal at the prestigious San Fransisco Chronicle Competition in 2017 and was awarded 91 points from Wine Enthusiast.
Tasting notes
Medium ruby colour, with garnet hints.
First impressions are of a fruit forward nose, displaying red fruits and oak. Opens up to reveal strawberry, cherry, and creamy, sweet vanilla oak. There’s a little coffee and smoke in there too, perhaps even a hint of gamey meat.
On the palate, there is soft tannin, medium+ acidity.
Flavours are of ripe strawberry and cherry, with a nice balance of vanilla oak. It’s medium bodied with a smooth, lasting finish.

Conclusion
This is a very pleasant medium-weight wine, with a well-integrated balance of fruit and oak. There are only around 30 bottles of this wine left at the tasting room at $40 each, so stop by if you’re near, and pick some up. A review of the 2015 vintage should be along soon.
