Summer Solstice Sunrise at Sculpterra

This is my first foray into time-lapse photography.

Golden Morning is the cat sculpture, which has become the main emblem for Sculpterra Winery and Sculpture Garden in Paso Robles, California. It was a favorite design of the sculptor, John Jagger, and this largest version is 14ft tall, and carved from black granite.

Having noted recently that Golden Morning faces north-east, I figured the best time to photograph the sculpture was at sunrise on the summer solstice. This meant getting to the winery just after 5:00 am to get set up, but it was worth it to experience the golden light moving over the carved stone, lighting up the bronze whiskers.

Viewing this means you, too, can experience this incredible piece of art in light that only occurs once a year, at a time of day that the gardens are not open to the public. Please enjoy, and share with your friends.

As a reminder, my artwork will be on the wall at Sculpterra Winery and Sculpture Garden through the end of this month. If you’d like to see my work in person, please stop by this week.
