Wine Review: Sculpterra – Cabernet Sauvignon 2015

Sculpterra’s Flagship Varietal

Cabernet Sauvignon was the first grape varietal planted at Sculpterra, back in 1993. That block, known as “Bentley Ironworks” has gravel and clay soils, much like some of the most famous vineyards in Bordeaux. Elsewhere at Sculpterra, the soil can be sandy loam, hard clay, and even some more rocky areas.

This particular wine takes 85% Cabernet Sauvignon fruit from across the lower elevations of the vineyard, and 15% Merlot from a higher elevation block. It was aged in oak barrels for 16 months, with a portion of those barrels being new French oak.

Tasting Notes

Tasted last, July 2018 (and numerous occasions before…)

The colour is a medium+ garnet red, with a little purple at the edge. Legs of medium speed form quickly. Alcohol is listed as 14.3%

Upon opening, the aromas are somewhat muted, with cherry fruit and a woody character. Given more time in the glass though, the intensity improves, displaying ripe cherry, leather, spice, and vanilla. This is a young wine, so patience is required to bring out it’s best. With enough breathing time (5+ hours in a glass), I’ve had this wine smelling uncannily like cherry-pecan pie and leather!

On the palate, this wine has a full mouthfeel, with dry, medium tannin, and medium+ acidity. Flavours are of intense cherry/blackberry fruit, sweet spices, and vanilla.

The finish is balanced and of a nice length. On one occasion I did get a touch of orange peel bitterness on the tail end, but I think that was just my palate that day.

Conclusion

I personally think this is one of the best value wines that Paul Frankel produces at Sculpterra. It’s one of a number of Cabernet Sauvignon wines available from the winery, ranging from $25 to $60, with this one being $36. Open and decant this wine now, or cellar it for another 5 years or more. Either way, I’d certainly recommend this one. It’s a mainstay of the Sculpterra lineup and is available to taste throughout the month of August 2018.

Head to the tasting room or the website for more on this wine, and Sculpterra Winery. The Cab’ wines are so popular at Sculpterra, they have a wine club dedicated to them.
