Wine Review: Sculpterra – Statuesque 2015

Largest horse, biggest blend

Statuesque features John Jagger’s “Golden Hooves” sculpture on the silkscreened label. The sculpture is the largest of John Jagger’s bronze horses, created over a span of 18 months using a technique John Jagger called “Crosshatch”. Individual bronze rods up to 1/4″ diameter were welded together to form the 3D shapes.

The wine is a popular bold blend, priced at $40. This 2015 vintage comprises 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Syrah, and 24% Petite Sirah and was aged in oak barrels for 16 months.

Tasting Notes

Tasted, June 2018.

The colour is deep ruby, with a little purple.

Bold, dark fruit dominates the nose, with ripe blackberry, plum, cherry. There’s an element of toasted oak too.

On the palate, it’s full, rich, and balanced, with medium+ acidity and tannin.

Flavours are of ripe dark fruits, with well-integrated oak and spice.

The finish is balanced, smooth, and less tannic than you might expect for a heavier wine like this.

Conclusion

It’s not hard to see why this is a popular wine for Sculpterra. Careful selection of fruit for this wine results in a wine with a full mouthfeel, ripe fruits, and a smooth finish.

My usual taste would be something a little lighter weight than this wine, but with barbequed tri-tip or ribeye, this is a sure bet.

If you want bold fruit in something a little lighter, try Figurine, and if you like tannic structure, Maquette could be for you.

All sound a bit heavy for you? Perhaps Mega Focus could be your thing. That’s a Rhone blend, with a lighter weight. There’s a review on that one somewhere around here
