Syrah
Made famous by the Rhone region of France, Syrah is one of the worlds most popular grape varietals with close to 500,000 acres planted. It’s not hard to see why it’s so popular, given it’s rich colour and flavours.
California has been growing Syrah since the mid-1970’s, and the Central Coast area is known to produce some world-class wines with this grape.
The fruit for this wine was sourced from Indian Valley, in Monterey County. Fermentation took place in macro bins before being aged in neutral oak barrels for 7 months.
Tasting Notes
Tasted, July 2018
Medium-deep ruby-purple colour. Slight colouring of the glass.
Medium+ intensity nose. Blackberry jam, coffee, and cinnamon spice.
On the palate, it’s a youthful middleweight, with medium+ acidity, and medium tannin.
Fruit and pepper spice flavours remain, with a balanced finish.
Conclusion
Syrah seems to vary immensely, depending on origin and production techniques. Some are meaty, others are smoky or taste like black liquorice. This one is youthful and fruity with some delicious spice on the finish.
If this sounds like a wine you would enjoy, come by Sculpterra’s tasting room or order online. It’s open for tasting at the winery during August. Bottle price is $36.
